Lok Sabha staff test positive at Covid-19, officials say

A Lok Sabha housekeeper tested positive for coronavirus disease, according to at least three officials who declined to be named, in the first Covid-19 case among 3,000 lower house employees.

The staff member was not working in the Parliament complex, but in one of the Lok Sabha secretariat establishments at 36 GRG Road.

The housekeeper, according to officials, had been at home since Parliament’s budget session was suspended on March 23.

“About 10 days ago, he got sick and went to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML) for a checkup and tests, including the ECG. He was discharged the same day, “said an official.

Another official said that he later developed a cough, fever and body pain, symptoms of coronavirus disease.

“On April 18, he went again for a checkup at the RML Hospital. This time, doctors examined him for Covid-19. On Monday (April 20), his report arrived and he tested positive for Covid-19, ”said the second official.

The New Delhi Municipal Council and other agencies were contacted to test Covid-19 for family members.

The housekeeper has a wife, three sons, and a daughter. Her four grandchildren were also staying in the same house in Kali Bari Marg, New Delhi.

One of his sons works with Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), and is currently posted in the CCTV wing at Parliament House.

The Lok Sabha president’s office has been evaluated on development, authorities said.
