NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha proceedings were postponed four times on Friday following protests from the opposition over certain comments from BJP members, including against the Gandhi family.
The uproar started during the procedure for the introduction of the tax bill and other laws (relaxation and modification of certain provisions), 2020.
Congress and the Trinamool Congress vigorously protested certain comments from BJP members, including Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, and BJP’s Locket Chatterjee.
After speaking for some time during the bill’s presentation procedure, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that her deputy Thakur will speak about the PM Cares Fund.
Members of the opposition expressed concern about the fund and, as he spoke, Thakur attacked Congress and the Gandhis. He also alleged that Congress had misused the PM Relief Fund.
Thakur said that the Opposition sees everything, even good things, in a bad light. “Your intention and your thinking are not good,” he said.
Attacking Congress, Thakur said that the prime minister’s national aid fund has not been registered so far and also stressed that the alleged misuse of funds should be investigated.
When members of Congress protested, Thakur said the names of Nehru and the Gandhi family should be taken and claimed that the Gandhi family ruined the country.
On the concerns of the Opposition, he mentioned that during the elections, it was said that the EVMs are not working properly, and then it was about demonetization, triple talaq and GST.
On the PM Cares Fund, the minister said that people went to court against the fund and the courts have ruled in favor of the fund.
The fund was created in March and opposed in April. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was preparing to fight the coronavirus pandemic, at that time too, the opposition was doing politics, Thakur charged.
He also said that poor and elderly people, as well as children, have contributed to the fund.
Congressional Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said Chinese companies have donated to the PM-Cares Fund and that too should be looked into.
In protest of the minister’s comments about the Gandhis, members of Congress left the Chamber.
When President Om Birla asked the minister to stop, Thakur said he needs more time to bring out the true face of the opposition.
“The PM Cares Fund is a constitutionally established charitable public trust. The PM National Relief Fund was created solely for the benefits of one family – the Nehru-Gandhi family,” he said.
Amid the uproar, West Bengal BJP member Chatterjee made some comments that were opposed by Trinamool members of Congress.
As the uproar continued, Birla warned the members not to stand up to speak and that members’ protection is important.
“If someone stands up to speak … I will take action … I will appoint them and remove them from the House,” Birla said, adding that it would apply to all members and ministers.
Taking into account the social distancing regulations in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, members have been asked not to stand up while speaking.
Apparently referring to certain comments by members of the ruling party, Trinamool Congressman Kalyan Banerjee said such things cannot continue and alleged that the president was trying to protect the BJP members. Banerjee even said he’s ready to face suspension as well.
Amid the din, the Speaker first suspended the procedure for 30 minutes until 4:20 pm.
After the House reconvened, Sitharaman introduced the bill and then the House resumed the discussion on supplementary demands.
Members of Congress led by Gaurav Gogoi demanded an apology from Thakur for his comments against the Gandhis.
When Rama Devi, who was presiding over the proceedings, asked Chowdhury to speak about the supplemental demands for excess subsidies, he said that the House had to be put in order first and then attacked Thakur for his comments.
Later, Rama Devi asked BJP member Jayant Sinha to speak about supplementary demands.
As he spoke, members of Congress launched slogans such as ‘Anurag Thakur maafi maango’ and ‘Speaker saheb sadan main aaiye’. They raised slogans while standing.
Some congressmen entered the Well of the Chamber raising slogans and the Treasury benches did not react to the slogans.
Amid the din, Rama Devi adjourned the House session for 30 minutes until 5 pm.
Subsequently, the procedures were postponed twice for 30 minutes each until 6 pm.
As soon as the House convened at 5.30pm, Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the chair, asked the protesting members to sit in their places for their own safety, as well as the safety of others in light of the pandemic. of Covid-19.
Agrawal also sought their cooperation and asked them to allow the Chamber to function.
