Lockdown is an option, says Maharashtra's chief minister as Covid cases rise

Bombay:

A day after Maharashtra witnessed the highest peak in a day of 25,833 COVID-19 cases, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said today that the lockdown is an option but is confident that people will follow the rules on their own.

Speaking to journalists in Nandurbar, Thackeray also appealed to people to get vaccinated against the virus without fear.

The COVID-19 situation has turned bleaker as the number of new cases on Thursday crossed the highest increase on record in September, he admitted.

“I see the lockdown as an option in the future. But I trust that the people of the state will cooperate (and follow the COVID-19 regulations voluntarily) like last time,” he said.

When the pandemic started last year, there was nothing to fight the virus with, Thackeray said.

“But now at least we have the vaccines as a shield. The priority now is to ensure that everyone is vaccinated. People must come forward to receive the vaccine,” he said.

The Union government has ensured that there will be no shortage of vaccines, he said.

There have been some cases where a person contracted the infection after vaccination, but those cases were not “life threatening,” the Chief Minister said.

“Everyone should be vaccinated without fear,” he added.
