Struck by the new coronavirus, Maharashtra on Thursday detected Covid-19 cases in a prison, with 72 inmates and seven jail staff testing positive. One of the most overcrowded prisons in the country, Arthur Road Prison in Mumbai has almost 2,600 inmates with a capacity of just 800.
Meanwhile, the total Covid-19-linked deaths rose to 1,783 on Thursday, with a total case count reaching 52,952 in the country. Total figures include 35,902 active cases and 15,266 recoveries.
India also began its largest repatriation exercise on Thursday to bring back its stranded citizens abroad. Air India’s first flight with 177 passengers landed in Kochi from Abu Dhabi. It was followed by a Dubai-Kozhikode flight from the same airline. INS Jalashwa of the Indian Navy also arrived in the Maldives to bring back stranded Indian citizens.
As of May 13, up to 64 flights and three Navy ships will be operated to take home nearly 15,000 Indians stranded abroad.

2 U2 Stay Home: Mumbai Police Security Tunes
Mumbai police posted memes from popular rock bands on their Twitter account and urged citizens to stay indoors during the shutdown. “Stay inside, because we are on the street, playing your favorite safety songs with our Band-o-bast,” the tweet reads. Memes from popular rock bands like U2, Backstreet Boys, Oasis and Linkin Park appeared in his tweet. Using the gangs’ names creatively, the police advised citizens to “U2” stay home, not hang around “street boys”, the home is an “oasis” and not visit “Linkin Park”.

Goa: quarantine stamp ink causes burns, peeling skin
Quarantine stamps that aim to control people with a travel history are causing skin burns and allergic reactions in Goa. At checkpoints, passengers who cross the border and enter the state have two different inks: one declares the date and the other sends them to quarantine. On Thursday, a Goan named Prajyot Lawande tweeted two photos showing his charred burn from ink applied at the Patradevi checkpoint.
Speaking to The Indian Express, he said: “We arrived at the checkpoint at 5 pm on Wednesday and they stamped us. There were three of us and we followed the instructions. We were taken to a quarantine facility where we waited for our results to arrive. We test negative. At first, there was some irritation on our hands, but then the skin showed some changes and finally in the morning I saw that the skin had come off. “
On Thursday, officials confirmed to the Health Department that it is operating the kiosks at the border that the ink has been changed.
Maharashtra: order to publish teachers in liquor stores for monitoring canceled
Earlier this week, the administration in the Akola district of Maharashtra sent nine university teachers to liquor stores in the city of Murtizapur to ensure social distancing, following the Center’s permission to reopen liquor stores. The order was canceled today.
The decision did not go down well with the teachers’ organization that dealt with the issue with the government. “We had been assigned to serve at liquor stores to monitor and supervise the crowd and maintain social distancing, but now the order has been canceled,” one of the Shri Gadge Maharaj College teachers told PTI.
Tehsildar Pradip Pawar told PTI that there was a shortage of staff since other staff related to the coronavirus had already been assigned to income, agriculture and other departments.
Black panther sighted in the Netravali Sanctuary of Goa
Courtesy of the national confinement, a Black Panther was seen in the Patiem heartbeat of the Netravali wildlife sanctuary in southern Goa. “A great insight into Goa’s rich wildlife; Black Panther Chamber caught in the Patiem heartbeat of the Netravali wildlife sanctuary,” Prime Minister Pramod Sawant tweeted, posting a photo of the panther. A senior official from the Forest department said they were trying to find out if it was a lone Black Panther in the sanctuary or if there were others as well. While the area is known as tiger habitat, this is the first time that a Black Panther was caught on camera at the sanctuary Netravali added.
Indian twin brothers fly home after spending 50 days at Dubai airport
The identical twin brothers of Indian origin, who were stranded at the Dubai airport for almost 50 days due to the Covid-19 blockade, finally boarded their flight to Kozhikode in Kerala today.
The twins, Jackson and Benson Andrews, were among the 177 Indian passengers who had been stranded at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport since March 19 while returning from Lisbon, Portugal, the Khaleej Times reported. They were among the 19 Indian passengers who were trapped inside the airport for more than a month.
“We are Indian citizens and we have worked in Portugal for two years. We decided to leave Lisbon when the situation was getting worse and worse in Europe, “Jackson said, as quoted.
