National equity indices hit new all-time highs on Tuesday as positive news from Moderna Inc, that its Covid-19 vaccine has a 94.5 percent success rate, boosted investor sentiment. The indices broke their previous highs hit on November 14 during the one-hour Muhurat Trading special.
Among top-tier indices, the S&P BSE Sensex hit a new record high of 44,161 levels in open trading, beating the previous level of 43,830.93. However, it was later traded around 43,740 levels, 100 points or 0.3 percent more.
Tata Steel (up 6%), State Bank of India (up 3%), L&T and HDFC Bank (up 2% each) and IndusInd Bank (up 1.5%) were the top 30% winners . stock index.
Meanwhile, the broader Nifty50 hit a new high of 12,934, but then retreated to 12,815 levels, down 35 points. The index broke the all-time high of 12,828.7.
Among the key NSE industry indices, the Nifty IT index fell 0.4%, while the Nifty FMCG index fell 0.2%. By contrast, the Nifty Metal Index added 3 percent to trade as the top winner.
In the broader market, the S&P BSE MidCap Index and the S&P BSE SmallCap Indexes rose 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively.
