Adam Zampa claimed 3 of 36 to keep England at 231.
CHASE: Can Australia seal the series here?
England will need early land. They’ll hope that Archer’s wood on Warner (already discarded three times on this tour) will help set the initial tone.
England finished strong; Get 231 on the board
Excellent 76-run stand for the ninth wicket between Adil Rashid and Tom Curran. 53 runs in the last four overs. Has Australia blurted it out a bit, or has the ninth stop just put the first-rate ruling in perspective?
What you think?
Highest window partnership for England in ODI: 100 Liam Plunket and Vikram Solanki v PAK, Lahore 2005 81 Jos Buttler & Adil Rashid v AUS, Manchester 2018 76 Tom Curran & Adil Rashid v AUS, Manchester 2020 * 60 Tom Curran & Chris Woakes vs. AUS, Adelaide 2018 #ENGvAUS https://t.co/UXCoRZAFwu

Crucial partnership in progress
Tom Curran and Adil Rashid added what could turn out to be very important races here. Especially with Rashid’s leg spinners in the second inning. Can you fight 200?
Woakes vigil ends
The pressure was mounting on him to do all the scoring. Try an expansive trip from Hazlewood. Nicks off. A good 26 for him, but England is now 150/8
TWO MORE
An afternoon to forget until now. Zampa gets a third, a good dip delivery he gets under Billings’ bat, which was forming to cut. Starc then takes out Sam Curran. England in all kinds of trouble now in 143/7. Risk of being eliminated.
He wakes up looking good
He has good memories of this land. He won a magnificent Test Match against Pakistan earlier this summer. Where Billings is fighting for time, Woakes has already reached three limits, two of them in Zampa. Another 15 overs to go. 250 will be the target.
OUTSIDE! Zampa takes over; Morgan leaves
Another smart move. This time with the DRS call. Zampa gets one to untap the England captain, the umpire rules he is not out, presumably hoping he has thrown his outside leg. Carey convinces Finch for the review. And see three reds in return!
Huge window. Morgan is the only hitter who has looked comfortable today. He went for a 52 ball 42. England 117/5 in 29 overs.
250 seems to be a long way off now. What can Woakes and Billings do from here?
OUTSIDE! Half a step forward and another step back
Just when it looked like Morgan was leading a mini counterattack, hitting three fours on four deliveries, England have fallen behind once again. And that’s due to a strong tactical move by Finch to bring in Cummins.
Cummins zips Jos Buttler and pings him in front of the stumps. The referee dismisses it immediately and Buttler makes a hopeful review. The review is being held due to the referee’s call, but your window is not.
England 107/4 in 26 overs
OUTSIDE! Zampa removes root
Talk about instant impact. It takes three balls for Zampa to enter the game. Throw one, luring Root into the unit. The ball spins too little to take the edge and Finch takes a rough catch on the slide. Root worked for his 39 (73) but the resistance of half a century is now over.
England 91/3 in 23 overs. Here’s Jos, the boss!
50 Association
Stoinis the man with a porthole in his back. Root lowers the track, in part due to the slow nature of the field, and hits it against the stands. The fifth pitcher has conceded 20 in 2 overs. Root and Morgan have added 50 for the third wicket. Fascinating things.
Finally, here is Zampa! We’ll see if the twist comes into play here. Remember, Morgan asked for slow, rotating surfaces to prepare for the next 50-year World Cup in England.

England have scored 4.96 runs over while playing attacking shots in the first 20 overs in the last two ODIs, their lowest level at this stage in an ODI series since the start of 2006. #ENGvAUS

20 overs: England 69/2
Will Root, Morgan attacks the fifth bowler
That’s Marcus Stoinis, in the order of introduction in the attack. Morgan is looking for an overpowering jerk right away, not far behind a deep square leg fielder who throws himself bravely. But it is a very necessary limit. The execution rate is still around 3.30.
Two maidens in a row
England’s innings are going nowhere right now as Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins launch two maidens into a trot. In fact, England don’t score a 15-ball run on either side of the drink break.
A field error by Labuschagne allows them a breather, giving Joe Root his third limit.
Mitchell Marsh on the attack
A double change in attack. Can the patterns from England’s Test and ODI come together in this reconstruction?
Meanwhile, a substitute is replaced. Daniel Sams comes in, hits him on the hand and must be replaced on the field by Sean Abbott.
Dividends from a new bat
Joe Root calls for a bat change. As instant returns go, this is right there. The first two balls have been sent to the limit. An upbeat spinning jerk followed by a gorgeous tour through the extra deck. From 2 out of 28, Root is up to 12 out of 31.
Cummins may have just released the pressure there with a loose first hit.
10 over fact …
England are 32/2 with rebuilding to be done. Joe Root will have to move at some point. He’s 3 out of 25 right now. And time for the first bowling change of the day. Pat Cummins replaces Mitchell Starc.
Eoin Morgan is here …
And Australia has a man in the ravine of legs for him against Starc. Be careful with the movements of the trigger to the side of the leg. Sowing the idea of a short ball in your head.
OUTSIDE! Jason Roy fell short of his fold
A magnificent fieldwork by Marcus Stoinis on the cover. Root hits and runs and Roy responds. Stoinis charges, picks up the ball and, with that fluid motion, knocks down the stumps at the front end. Roy far below his crease.
Roy looked good for a while, but he still didn’t have a good score for him. England 29/2 in the eighth plus.
Meanwhile, Joe Root, who has one on the inside of his knee (ouch), is under heavy pressure in the middle. 2 out of 18 currently, unable to save even an occasional gift.
During the ashes, Joe Root spent an incessant period on the nets working on his trigger movement to combat Hazlewood’s length before deciding to eliminate it entirely and employ a more minimalist approach by staying very still in the crease like he’s trying to do now # engvaus

OUTSIDE! Starc takes out Bairstow
A seven-ball duck for Jonny Bairstow. The England starter has yet to face Starc in this game and is playing for whoever comes in. This one faces him. Take the edge on the way to the gatekeeper. England 20/1 in the fifth over.
Here’s Joe Root!
Roy breaks free against Hazlewood
Break your rhythm tactic. Roy loads the metronome and passes one through the bonus deck. Two more limits follow at the end, one crossed the square and one hit past the point. Confidence building?

Hazlewood from the other end …
I found great success at this bowling alley. Duration of the test matches two days ago. Will England play the situation or try to knock her out of reach?
Bairstow has a couple of waves, goes nowhere and Hazlewood starts out with a maiden.
Starc to start. Roy and Bairstow are in the middle
Mitchell Starc is in top form, Australia estimates. He was limping a bit and had a bit of a knee brace. Immediately he’s asking the England batter questions, he gets one to double over to Jason Roy and beats the batters for pace and the umpire knocks Roy out.
But this was not a complete delivery and this is Old Trafford, a field with good rebound on offer. Roy has those details traced in his head and reviews them. Wickets are comfortably missing.
Roy needs a score in ODI cricket …
TOSS: No, Smith is NOT back.
For precautionary reasons. Australia plays an unchanged team on an unchanged field. However, they have lost the draw here and Morgan wants to put pressure on the opposition on the scoreboard.
The England pattern has made two changes. The Curran brothers have come for Mark Wood and Moeen Ali!
“It’s the same wicket as the other day. It could get a little worse this afternoon. It probably didn’t turn as much as we thought it would. [on Friday] but if you hit the right area, there is a bit on offer “- EOIN MORGAN
Official CA update on Smith: “Steve passed both assessments, but we have decided to rest him as an additional precaution in line with our high level of focus on duty of care to all players” #ENGvAUS

Steve Smith should be back
ICYMI: Australia’s superstar hitter has passed two concussion tests and is available for your selection.
Preview: Old brand vs England ODI cricket brand
It’s what it was in the opening game. Australia beat England by playing a constant and calculated type of cricket that the hosts clearly outperformed during their ODI revolution in the last five years.
Will that impose a rethinking of Eoin Morgan’s strategies in case lightning strikes twice? Our man Bharat Sundaresan discusses the concept in your preview.
Prelude – Can Australia inflict a series defeat on the World Champions?
They have won two on the rebound on this tour (remember last T20I) after losing the first two. It’s so safe to assume that Australians have slowly shaken off their rust. They are one game away from winning an ODI series. And what a victory it will be.
England haven’t lost a bilateral ODI series at home since 2015. And who beat them then? Australia, of course.
On that note, welcome to the second ODI in the series. Buckle up, grab a snack, and get ready for a ride!
