Engineer’s Day 2020: National Engineer Day is celebrated on September 15 to mark the anniversary of the birth of the eminent engineer Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya not only in India but also in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Sir Visvesvaraya is widely known for solving problems related to irrigation in India. Some of his significant works include the irrigation system in the Deccan canals, inventing automatic gates intended to regulate the flow of water in the reservoirs.

India is also home to Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, commonly known as ‘Metro Man’, Vinod Dham, known as ‘Father of the Pentium Chip’, and many other geniuses in the field of engineering. And many more follow in his footsteps so far. According to AISHE 2019 report, more than 30 lakh students study engineering or related subjects in India. In the main results of the recently concluded joint entrance examination (JEE), more than 10 lakh students had participated this year.

In the Times Higher Education Ranking (THE), fewer Indian engineering universities appear as seven IITs in Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Madras, Roorkee and Kharagpur that did not participate in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE ). Older IITs had raised concerns about their performance in the World University Rankings released in September.
