The Madras High Court ordered the closure of all TASMAC state liquor stores in Tamil Nadu, allowing only the online sale or delivery of liquor at the door until the end of the closure.

The national blockade, required by the coronavirus outbreak, will be in effect until May 17.

Six hundred new positive cases of Covid-19, including 399 in Chennai, were reported today in the state, said state health minister C Vijayabaskar.

The resumption of liquor sales in the state was well-received with the outbreak of cookies and the distribution of cakes by some alcohol lovers, as consumers lined up in front of stores early in the morning to get their share .

In opposition to the movement to reopen liquor stores, DMK President M. K Stalin, dressed in black, held a banner and a black flag in front of his house, claiming that the opening of liquor stores would lead to a further increase in the spread of coronavirus.

The government had defended the measure, citing the opening of liquor stores in neighboring Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and people who went there in bulk to buy alcoholic beverages.

Even before stores opened at 10 a.m. in non-containment zones, the queue stretched up to a few kilometers in various locations, including those in the Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Chengelpet and Tiruvallur districts. .

The store workers wore masks and gloves while distributing alcoholic beverages.
