With so many phones launching in a given year, it only makes sense that some of them would run away. Other companies get fiercer, prices get more competitive, and those that aren’t really surprising are often left out.
Unfortunately, that seems to have been the case for LG in recent years. The company makes solid devices, but a handful of quirks or missteps prevent them from achieving true greatness.
2020 is here, and this time, we are getting the LG Velvet (aka the successor to the 2019 LG G8). This is the phone we expected to be called LG G9, but LG wanted to do something a little different instead of a boring update year after year.
Is Velvet what the company needs to change things? Here’s everything we know about the phone so far!

LG G8
One of the most forgotten phones of 2019
Not very impressed with what we are seeing so far from the LG Velvet? The G8 is still quite powerful and capable, and you can buy it right now. It has an OLED display, good battery life, and a top-notch headphone jack. It is not our first telephone recommendation, but it is not the worst either. If you’re a fan of LG, it’s definitely worth checking out.
LG is taking a new approach to its design

LG won’t hold its launch event for the Velvet until May 7, but that hasn’t stopped the company from already unveiling the phone’s design. Seriously. On April 28, LG shared renders of official Velvet devices.
The front of the device houses a display with very minimal bezels, along with a slight curve at the edges. The three cameras on the back are also positioned quite differently than most other Android phones, and LG says this is a “Raindrop” design with the different camera sensors dropping in size to mimic the ” images of falling raindrops “, ending with the LED flash in the background.
Also featured in the phone is a “3D arc design”, with LG curving the display and back panel for a symmetrical and “natural” hand feel.
In addition to the still images, LG also shared a design video that offers a different look of the Velvet.
This is the LG G9 with a different name

LG has been pretty consistent with the brand of its device over the years, but by 2020, that’s changing.
Two reports from March 27 indicated that the entire G-series brand is dead for future smartphones and that LG is switching to a naming scheme that will highlight certain features / aspects of that particular device.

After this, LG confirmed that its new phone will be called “Velvet”. According to the company, the name Velvet is “intended to evoke images of brilliant smoothness and premium smoothness, two key features of the new phone.”
Introducing a new name / brand tactic doesn’t guarantee sales are better for LG, but there’s no denying that the G series and V series have gotten a bit long. If the phone itself is solid, an exciting name might be what LG needs.
Here are the specifications 🤓

The design is not the only thing that LG has confirmed about the Velvet. Along with those renders, the company also shared some of Velvet’s official specs. This is what has been confirmed so far:
Category | LG Velvet |
---|---|
Monitor | 6.8 inch Cinema FullVision 20.5: 9 aspect ratio |
Processor | Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 |
5G | ✔️ |
Rear camera 1 | 48MP main camera |
Rear camera 2 | 8MP Ultra Wide Camera |
Rear camera 3 | 5MP deep camera |
Drums | 4,300 mAh battery |
Colors | Aurora White Aurora gray Aurora Green Illusion Sunset |
The most interesting specification on that list is the Snapdragon 765 processor. It offers almost the same power as the flagship Snapdragon 865, but is a more affordable chip to use. It also allows 5G connectivity, if that’s something that interests you.
There is talk that Google will also use the Snapdragon 765 in its next Pixel 5, so it will be interesting to see how it works on the LG Velvet.

The LG V50, G8X, and V60 have all been powered by LG’s dual-screen polarizer accessory, a case for phones that adds a second screen to them (basically turning them into a pseudo-folded phone).
LG has confirmed that the dual-screen accessory will work with the Velvet, which means that you’ll be able to add a second screen to the phone if your heart desires.
On top of that, the Velvet will also work with LG’s Stylus Pen so you can further transform it into a makeshift Galaxy Note alternative.
So what about the release date and price?

In recent years, LG has announced its new G-series phone at the Mobile World Congress in February. He did it for the G5, G6, and G8, with the G7 unveiled at a special event in New York during May.
This year, LG decided to shake up its launch formula. While the new V-series model typically launches towards the second half of the year, the LG V60 was unveiled in February before the G9 / Velvet.
LG shared the previous teaser video on April 23, and in it, the company confirms that the Velvet will be officially released on April 7 through a digital launch event. LG has also confirmed that sales will start in South Korea on May 15.
As for the price, we hope LG is smart about how much the phone is asking for. The LG G8 had a starting price of $ 850 in the United States, but with the V60, LG sells it for just $ 800 in the country. Seeing how the V60 uses the Snapdragon 865 and the Velvet will drop to the 765, leading us to believe that the Velvet could be marketed as LG’s value flagship by 2020.
It’s hard to pin down an exact price for the phone, but we could see something in the $ 600- $ 700 range. In a world where phones typically cost $ 1,000 or more, that would be a wonderful breath of fresh air.
Let’s not rule out the LG G8
Source: Android Central
With all this talk about the LG Velvet, it can be easy to forget that the G8 is still available and available for purchase.
The G8 was never a perfect phone (and still isn’t), but you could also spend your money on much worse phones. It is built like a tank, it has a really good display, reliable battery life and excellent call quality.
LG software is showing its age and cameras are not the best money can buy, but if you are a LG fan, this is a good option. Also, now that the G8 has been gone for a while, it’s not uncommon to find multiple deals and promotions for it.
