A local court on Wednesday withdrew 61 of the more than 130 defendants, detained in connection with the Palghar lynching case, in judicial custody and another 51 in police custody.

A total of 113 defendants, including a minor, were brought before the M V Jawale First Class Judicial Magistrate’s Court (JMFC) in Dahanu in the Palghar district.

The incident took place in the village of Gadchinchle on April 16 when two seers were driving to Surat from Mumbai in a car with a driver to attend a funeral. A crowd of villagers stopped their vehicle and beat them to death on suspicion that they were child lifters, even when some police officers had arrived at the scene.

Palghar District Rural Police have recorded three FIRs in connection with the lynching incident. Up to 134 people have been arrested by local police and the state CID.
