The Delhi government has written a letter to the Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE, urging it to postpone the Board examinations from March 2021 until May. The state government has also asked the central board to consider further reducing the syllabus for the CBSE 10th 12th Board Exam 2021, as schools remain closed due to the pandemic.

Schools in India have been closed for almost 7 months this academic year. While the central government has now allowed schools to reopen, the states have decided to postpone it. Many states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, etc. have decided to keep schools closed, even for students in classes 9 to 12 until at least October 31.

With the schools closed, the governments of Delhi (where most schools are affiliated with CBSE) have written a letter asking for more time before the board’s exams take place. Delhi has also decided to keep schools closed until October 31.

“Although online and semi-online teaching and learning activities are carried out through live classes, as well as worksheets or activity sheets, they cannot replace the teaching-learning process in the physical classroom” said the DoE in the letter written to CBSE.

“In order to provide students with a reasonable time to study in person at the schools, it is requested that the ongoing academic session be extended beyond March and that the CBSE board examinations not be taken before May 2021 Consequently, the next academic session may start in July 2021, “he added. By the way, the letter arrives days after reports that CBSE and CISCE are considering further reducing the syllabus and delaying board exams for 45-60 days.

Furthermore, the government has also asked CBSE to consider further reducing the study program to accommodate the truncated class time. The board also requested that the 2021 CBSE Sample Papers (which were released last week) be further revised based on the reduced curriculum.

“The CBSE had cut 30% of the curriculum in all subjects in anticipation of the opening of schools in July, but schools in Delhi are closed until October 31. Sample questionnaires are also requested to be aligned With the shorter 2020 -21 session curriculum it can be prepared to the latest question paper design and made available to students as soon as possible, “said the DoE.

“Practical and project assignments are an integral part of any topic that includes the assessment of desired skills and competencies. It is relevant that students practice the same for a sufficient period of time. The board is requested to provide detailed guidance regarding the realization of these practical exams in such conditions or any other alternative modality that substitutes to the practical part of the subject ”, indicates the letter.

The CBSE Board Exams for classes 10 and 12 are held in the month of February through April. The board had revised the 2019 dates to begin board examinations as of February 15 instead of the usual dates of March 1. This year, however, there is widespread speculation that the Board Exams may be postponed until May, to make up for the closure of schools in the country since March 2020.
