PANAJI: Ancient FC Goa star Manuel Lanzarote returns to Indian Super League (ISL), this time with Chennaiyin FC.
During their first year in India (2017-18), Lanzarote formed a delightful partnership with Ferran Corominas in Goa when the team reached the semi-finals under Sergio Lobera.
Lanzarote was a crucial player in Goa, scoring 13 goals and providing six assists in 19 games. He went on to become captain ATK the next season, where his success was not as successful as in Goa.
The Spaniard is now putting on his boots again. Rafael Crivellaro who has been ruled out of season due to injury.
“After the evaluation of the club’s medical team, it has been known that Rafael has suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle that will leave him out for at least two months. He will now return home to Brazil, ”Chennaiyin FC said in a statement on Saturday.
While Crivellaro’s absence will be a serious blow to Chennaiyin’s chances of reaching the top four, the former champions hope Lanzarote can fill the void left by their captain.
According to sources, Chennaiyin has already agreed terms with Lanzarote and the transfer formalities are expected to be completed within the next 24 hours.
“Lanzarote will arrive in India very soon. There is a mandatory 14-day quarantine period, so it could only be available for the last six or seven league games, “said a source who has been following the development.
There are signs that Lanzarote will have a role to play against Hyderabad FC on January 31.
Crivellaro was injured against ATK Mohun Bagan on December 29 when he was replaced by Deepak Tangri with 20 minutes to go.
“The club is working to sign a replacement player,” Chennaiyin said in the statement.
