Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Bihar Chief Minister and Supreme Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), was released on bail from the Jharkhand High Court in the Chaibasa Treasury case, related to the forage scam on Friday. However, the former CM will remain in jail as Dumka’s treasury case is still pending.
The High Court asked Yadav to submit two personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each and a deposit penalty of Rs 2 lakhs to secure the bail. He also requested his medical report and the details of all the people he has met during the course of his treatment at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi.
This case, RC 68 (A) / 1996, concerns the fraudulence of Rs 33.67 crore from the Chaibasa district treasury (now in Jharkhand) during 1992-93 when Lalu was the undivided Prime Minister of Bihar.
On January 24, 2018, a special IWC court in Ranchi convicted Yadav and former Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra in the third multi-crore forage scam case related to the fraudulent withdrawal of money from the Chaibasa treasury in the decade 1990. The court had imposed a five-year prison term on Lalu and Jagannath, in addition to a fine of Rs. 5 lakh each. A total of 50 defendants were convicted in the case, while six were released.
In addition to Lalu, the other main defendants convicted in the case were RK Rana, Vidyasagar Nishad, Dhruv Bhagat, former Chief Secretary Sajal Chakraborty, IAS officials Phool Chand Singh and Mahesh Prasad.
The 72-year-old is currently serving a sentence at the Birsa Munda prison in Ranchi. Previously, he was granted bail in the Deoghar treasure case.
