On Tuesday, the Health Ministry said that Lakshadweep reported its first case of COVID-19 and that a team of experts was transferred to the Union territory to assist with containment activities.
“The index case is a traveler who arrived in Lakshadweep from Kochi in Kerala on January 4 on a boat. The case had been reported to the hospital with symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 and tested positive, ”the ministry said.
He said 31 primary contacts from the index case have been tracked and quarantined, of which 14 have been found to be positive and isolated.
“Fifty-six contacts of positive cases detected so far have also been traced and quarantined. The UT Administration has started disinfection procedures and an intense risk communication activity has been launched, ”said the ministry.
“The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has quickly dispatched a central multidisciplinary team to Lakshadweep. The team is made up of experts from the Jawaharlal Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry; National Institute of Virology, Pune; and the Regional Office of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare ”, he said.
