The Sunday night clash between the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab in Sharjah was the perfect example of why millions of cricket fans tune in to every IPL match.
The meeting between the two teams was considered the largest run chase in IPL history after Rahul Tewatia turned the game around in the 18th envelope of the run chase thrown by KXIP’s Sheldon Cottrell.
Chasing a stiff target of 224, Rajasthan Royals needed 51 of the last three overs. While game watchers believed it was done and dusted, Tewatia was there to prove otherwise.
The 27-year-old left-handed hitter smoked Cottrell for 5 6s on 18 and the required runs on the board dropped to 21 on 12 deliveries in an instant. Tewatia, who was initially struggling to snap the ball, finished with 53 of 31 deliveries consisting of 7 highs. While he was ultimately fired on the last ball of the 19, Jofra Archer (13 not out) and Tom Curran (4 not out) took the Royals home with three deliveries to spare.
Pain is what KXIP fans felt and the franchise, which was on the losing side, expressed all their feelings through a “Sad Will Smith” meme.
The royals who had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat responded to the KXIP meme with a meme.
Tewatia’s fireworks after a slow start were the talk of the town.
Previously, KXIP accumulated 223/2 after a splendid century by Mayank Agarwal (106 of 50). KL Rahul coming back from his glorious ton in the previous match, he broke 69 in 54 deliveries.
