Kolkata: Shoes thrown at vehicles of Kailash Vijayvargiya, Mukul Roy during BJP tour

Shoes were thrown at the vehicles of BJP leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy on Monday as they went on a tour in the Watganj area of Kolkata. The tour, which was scheduled to take place from Orphanganj Road to the BJP state headquarters in central Kolkata, had to be shortened after the police denied it permission.

The tour was led by the BJP National Secretary General Kailash Vijayvargiya, the party’s National Vice President Mukul Roy, and MP Arjun Singh. Interestingly, the new BJP Kolkata area observer and Former City Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and his assistant Baisakhi Banerjee missed the event.

As soon as the procession crossed the Watganj area, shoes and stones were thrown from a makeshift stage where a program of the ruling Trinamool Congress was taking place. However, the heavy police deployment in the area prevented the incident from escalating.

Policemen were seen repressing members of both parties as the procession crossed the area and the situation was soon brought under control.

“The police did not grant us permission to make a tour from Alipore to the center of Calcutta. It allowed us to take the roadshow out to Hastings. We ran the program as per permit and it was carried out peacefully. However, some TMC workers threw shoes and stones at us. Our workers showed restraint as we do not want to respond to provocations. We will not respond to violence with violence. We will respond through votes, ”said Vijayvargiya.

The incident comes less than a month after the national president of BJP JP Nadda’s convoy was attacked with stones near Diamond Harbor. Vijayvargiya, who was also part of the convoy, had suffered minor injuries in the attack.

The vehicles of Vijayvargiya, Roy, Dilip Ghosh, president of the state; and Anupam Hazra, the national secretary, smashed their windshields in the attack. Several BJP workers and security personnel were injured.
