Australia’s starter David Warner hit the ground hard and winced during a fielding mishap in Sunday’s ODI series win. Immediately after, he limped off the field and a car waited outside the SCG to take the senior player to a nearby hospital for scans.

Warner was ruled out for the remaining white ball games against India after injuring his groin in the second ODI. D’Arcy Short has been named his replacement in the T20I series that follows.

KL Rahul was asked about Warner’s injury at the press conference and the Indian vice captain cheerfully replied that he hopes Warner will not recover in time for the third ODI and probably for the remainder of the team’s tour to Down Under.

“We don’t know how bad his injury is. It would be better if he injured himself for a long time. One of his main hitters. It’s not nice to wish him on anyone, but it would be good for the team. His injury takes a long time, it would be good for our team. “Rahul said.

Warner looked sublime with the bat when he started the ODI series against India strong, scoring 69 and 83, helping Australia win the first two games. Warner’s initial partnerships with Aaron Finch have worried the Indian bowler and Rahul joked that the Indian team would be happy if Warner missed more matches on this tour.

KL Rahul’s comment on David Warner’s injury has drawn strong criticism on social media with fans pointing to the problem with word choice. Fans called India’s vice captain “despicable”, lacking in “sportsmanship”.
