The police, the investigation of the mysterious snake bites, the murder of Uthra S (25) in the southern Kerala district of Kollam, on the 7th of May, on Tuesday, decided to conduct a post-mortem on the bodies of two snakes, a viper, and a cobra that had bitten the deceased two months apart, in an attempt to gather more scientific evidence.
So far, two persons, including the deceased’s husband, Sooraj, and a local snake handler, have been arrested for letting a cobra loose in Uthra’s room May 6, which led to her death a day later. The second bite is fatal occurred when she was in treatment for the first bite by a viper to her husband of the home two months ago.
“We never came across a case in the recent past. We need to collect the maximum scientific evidence to corroborate the crime. Our preliminary investigation shows that it is a well-planned and executed the murder. We have tried to veterinary surgeons “help for the post-mortem of the two snakes,” said S Harishankar, Kollam rural superintendent of police (SP), which is monitoring the probe.

The test revealed that Sooraj had purchased a cobra a snake handler for Rs 10,000. On 6 May, according to the reports, took the snake to the Uthra of the paternal house in Anchal, where he was subjected to treatment from the first bite of the snake two months ago.
The police said that after Uthra fell asleep, Sooraj allegedly took out the snake from the bottle and threw it on her. He stayed awake all night to make sure that he could escape unharmed. He went out of the room in the morning and began to read a newspaper on the terrace. Soon, Uthra’s mother found her daughter unconscious on the bed. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors said that she died of a snake bite.
Later, when the room was searched, the family members found a cobra, who was murdered by Sooraj. The couple slept in a room with air conditioning and it was hard to believe that he didn’t realize that the serpent before, Uthra’s parents alleged in his complaint to the police. The forest department has also filed a case against the arrested accused to catch and kill a cobra and the snake under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
The police said that Sooraj plotted the murder to grab her property and marry another woman. A police investigation said Sooraj parents and other family members would be interrogated soon.
Kerala Women’s Commission has ordered that Uthra the son should be handed over to their parents immediately.
The state Forest Minister K Raju, who also belongs to Anchal, has congratulated the police team that cracked the case. “I know that the family of the victim. We’re going to ensure justice for them,” he said.
