An FIR has been filed at the Kozhikode Kasaba police station in Kerala against Zee News editor-in-chief Sudhir Chaudhary, based on a complaint accusing him of spreading religious animosity and hurting the feelings of the Muslim community regarding a program broadcast on the television network. March 11th.
The segment anchored by Chaudhary on March 11 focused on different types of “jihad”, using a flow chart that describes them.
The case was brought against Chaudhary under non-redeemable section 295 A of the IPC, based on a complaint by Adv P. Gavas, joint state secretary of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), the youth wing of the IPC in Kerala . Gavas said he decided to file the complaint against the presenter after viewing a clip of the show sent by a friend two days after its broadcast.
“The program broadcast by this channel is not based on a system we believe in. We recognize and believe in the constitutional obligations towards all the religions and secular values of this country. This program is in stark contrast to such beliefs. It is against a particular religious community, ”Gavas said by phone from Kozhikode, where he practices as a lawyer.
He said he consulted with AIYF state leadership before filing the complaint on March 17. The complaint was sent to Kerala DGP Lokanath Behera and copies sent to the Kozhikode Police Commissioner and the Minister of the Interior.
In the complaint, Gavas alleged that Chaudhary attacked the country’s Muslims through the “jihad flow chart” that he used in an attempt to increase religious tensions and create fissures between different communities. He pointed out the notice of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, where directive 2 (ii) warns against the use of images or words that despise religious groups or that promote communal attitudes.
After FIR registration, Gavas said he received a large number of calls from EEZ management, including from journalists in Delhi and Bengaluru, asking why he made that move. “They asked me about my reasons for making a complaint and why I did it in Kerala. Initially, they did not know that he was linked to a political organization. It’s natural. They wanted to know my side of the story that I wasn’t ready to do. I am not obliged to inform you of my position, ”he said.
The AIYF leader said he filed the complaint in Kozhikode while residing in the city. “Under the new IT Law, once a channel’s show is broadcast on television, it is public. If a viewer disagrees with the show, they can register it anywhere. A case can be filed against the show at anywhere. Since I’m a lawyer who practices here, I decided to present the case here, “he said.
