Karti Chidambaram on the renewal of the Tamil Nadu Congress

Before the Tamil Nadu polls, the mockery of Karti Chidambaram in Congress

It just means less authority and less responsibility, says Karti Chidambaram.

New Delhi:

Congressional MP Karti Chidambaram today gave a strong note of dissent against his party saying that huge committees are useless, as large numbers only result in decreased accountability. His statement came on a day when the party announced a giant panel of vice presidents and general secretaries in its Tamil Nadu unit ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for April-May this year.

Congress today appointed 32 vice presidents, 57 general secretaries, 104 secretaries, 56 executive committee members, 32 ex officio members and another 200 members to the Tamil Nadu Congressional Committee. Interestingly, he has only appointed one treasurer. The announcement came in a statement issued by the secretary general of Congress, KC Venugopal.

Karti Chidambaram, a MP from Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu, tweeted: “These giant committees are useless. 32 VP, 57 GS, 104 Secretaries. None will have authority, which means there is no responsibility.”

The MP’s discordant note follows his father, P Chidambaram’s support for dissidents during a meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi recently. He had supported the calls for elections at all levels and also demanded the reconstitution of the Parliamentary Board of Congress.

In his tweet criticizing the renewal of the Tamil Nadu Congress, Chidambaram tagged a number of high-level leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

In Tamil Nadu, which will go to the polls in a few months, Congress has traditionally played only a marginal role, mostly aligned with the DMK, a party that seeks to replace the current AIADMK regime, which itself is part of the NDA run by BJP.
