Karnataka Panchayat Election Results 2020 LATEST Updates: The number of candidates supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party who have won or led the Karnataka Gram Panchayat elections remains higher than the number of candidates supported by Congress with News18 Kannada reporting 12,795 candidates backed by the saffron party that leads or has won the Karnataka Gram Panchayat polls.

Although these polls are not conducted on party symbols, all political parties have made an effort to ensure that the candidate they support wins, in order to have their control over grassroots politics.

Up to 2,22,814 candidates opposed the election, while 8,074 candidates were elected unopposed.

Meanwhile, after continuously losing elections five times, a candidate from the banahatti taluk of the Navalagi Gram Panchayat district of Bagalkote finally won on Wednesday, a report in News18 said. The candidate named Danappa Asangi has been running in the Navalagi gram panchayat elections for the past 30 years, the report adds.

As a precautionary measure, the sale of liquor was banned in all districts of Karnataka. The electoral commission has started to count the postal ballots first.

The results of the recently concluded Gram Panchayat elections in Karnataka will be released on Wednesday. The counting of the votes of the 5,728 gram panchayats that went to the polls in two phases on December 22 and 27 began at 8 a.m.

Since the ballot papers were used at other polls than in the Bidar district, where EVMs were used, the announcement of the results could be delayed, poll officials said.

Elections were announced for a total of 91,339 seats in 5,728 panchayats out of 226 talkus in the state, of which unopposed candidates were chosen for 8,074 seats.

Elections for 43,238 seats were held in the first phase on December 22, while in the second phase 39,378 seats were voted on December 27.

A total of 2,22,814 candidates were in the fray.

While the first phase had a voter turnout of around 82 percent, it was around 80 percent in the second phase.

Although these polls are not carried out on party symbols, all political parties have made an effort to ensure that the candidate supported by them wins, to have their control in grassroots politics, which can be advantageous for them in taluk or zilla panchayat and even Assembly polls every time it happens.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said on Monday that the governing candidates supported by the BJP are likely to win the most seats.

“From my information, it is certain that between 85 and 90 percent of the candidates supported by the BJP will be chosen in the Gram Panchayat polls,” he said.

The vote was carried out in both phases with the necessary COVID precautions amid the prevailing pandemic situation.
