Karnataka Farewell Polls Didn’t Negatively Affect COVID-19 Infection Rate: Technical Committee

Between November 6 and 10, the positivity rate for these two areas was below the state average, the committee said.

The previous Assembly elections on November 3 in Karnataka to the two seats of RR Nagar in Bengaluru and Sira in Tumakuru have not negatively affected the rate of COVID-19 infection in those two districts. The state government’s Technical Advisory Committee on COVID-19 management said the positivity rate in these two areas between November 6 and 10 was less than 1% and remained below the state average.

At RR Nagar, a total of 14,727 tests were performed over four days, 84 of which were positive, which means a positivity rate of 0.57%. Similarly, in Sira, the number of tests performed over four days was 15,874 and 103 were positive. This meant a positivity rate of 0.65%. The positivity rate for the entire state for November 10 was 2.35%, TAC members said, and concluded that the holding of the elections has not resulted in an increase in cases in these two areas.

Incidentally, as previously reported, former minister and congressional candidate for bye elections in Sira’s constituency TB Jayachandra said on Monday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus and has been hospitalized ever since. His wife, who also tested positive for the virus, was also hospitalized. Because of this, he had to withdraw from the counting process.

The results of the two by-elections were released on Tuesday. In both seats, the BJP was victorious with the former MLA Congress and now BJP candidate Muniarathna winning from RR Nagar while Dr. Rajesh Gowda, a political rookie winning from Sira.

The poll bye in RR Nagar was carried out after the resignation of Munirathna, who was the MLA in office when it passed from Congress to the BJP. Sira went to the polls following the death of JD (S) B legislator Sathyanarayana in August.

As of Tuesday night, a total of 8,51,212 positive COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the state, including 11,430 deaths and 8,08,700 discharges.
