Karnataka Covid-19 wrap: State sees 53 new cases, death toll 31

Karnataka continued to operate Shramik Specials for migrants on Sunday when two more trains departed from stations on the outskirts of Bangalore.

With 53 new confirmed cases in Karnataka in the past 12 hours, the total number of new coronavirus cases in the state is now 847.

According to the Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, 22 of these are from Belagavi. With the new additions, the northern district of Karnataka now has 105 cases, behind the capital Bengaluru as the district with the most cases in the state.

Meanwhile, Shimoga and Bagalkote recorded eight new cases, each with seven more from Uttara Kannada, three more from Bengaluru and Kalaburagi, and one from Davangere and Chikkaballapura comprising the other new confirmed cases on Sunday at 12 noon.

Like Saturday, Karnataka had examined a lakh of people since the pandemic broke out in early March. Medical Education Minister Dr. Sudhakar K had said: “We are increasing our testing capacity to have 60 laboratories by the end of this month and we will be able to perform 10,000 tests per day.”

56 years succumbs to IRAG in Bangalore, death toll 31

With the death of a 56-year-old patient (P-846) linked to COVID-19 in Bengaluru on Sunday, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in Karnataka increased to 31.

According to health officials, the patient had succumbed to a severe acute respiratory infection on Monday (May 4), but tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday (May 9).

Four more Shramik specials leave Bangalore

According to South Western Railway (SWR) officials, each passenger receives meals prepared in base kitchens operated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

“While trains do not have pantry carts attached as a precaution, SWR ensures that passengers receive food from IRCTC’s base kitchens. Three meals are provided each day during the trip and the food is delivered at operational stops, “SWR Director of Public Relations E Vijaya told Indianexpress.com

Another railway official added: “As each passenger boards the train, a packet of food is provided. This includes a package of cooked rice, chapati, cookies, crackers, and pickles. ”

Passengers traveling on Shramik Specials are requested to arrive at a common point, primarily a police station, where document verification and medical examination are carried out.

Authorities explained that those verified will be taken to the train station in disinfected buses provided by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation.

“Once they arrive at the station, the railway and police personnel inform them about the trip and advise them on how to maintain social distance and be safe throughout the trip. During boarding, each passenger is rechecked and food packages are distributed, “added the official.

The return of expatriates to Karnataka: CM meets with ministers

Karnataka Prime Minister B S Yediyurappa met with other ministers in the state on Sunday to discuss preparing to quarantine Kannadigas returning from other states and countries. As discussed at the meeting, the ministers advised the CM to ensure that all Kannadigas returning home from other states register them online first.

“Only those who were stranded in other states due to the blockade will be allowed. They must inform their place of arrival and date when registering. They will be allowed depending on the availability of quarantine facilities, “suggested the ministers. Other steps discussed included not sending Kannadigas back to their villages upon arrival and instead quarantining them for 14 days.

Meanwhile, it was also suggested that the state refund the train fare for those returning from other states by train. “They (returnees) must be tested for COVID 19, even if they were tested in another state. If someone dies in another state, their body will not be taken to the state. Their last rites will be performed, wherever they are,” the council suggested. to the CM.

At the same time, it was suggested that the deceased in the state should perform their last rites in Karnataka, including those in other states. “Final decisions on such suggestions will be made after meeting with top bureaucrats and others,” a government official told Indianexpress.com after the meeting.

KSRTC Opens Help Lines to Facilitate Interstate Transportation

The Karnataka State Highway Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) decided on Sunday to begin operating the helpline numbers to provide information on interstate transportation facilities. However, officials clarified that the facility can only be used by government-approved Seva Sindhu electronic pass holders to travel back to their places of origin in other states.

“The helpline numbers will be operational from May 11 (Monday),” the officials added, issuing a list of phone numbers to travel to neighboring states.
