Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa today signaled the Roll-On / Roll-Off (RO-RO) train between Bengaluru (Nelamangala) and Solapur (Maharashtra) via videoconference. CM Yediyurappa stopped on the RO-RO train from Nelamagala station on the outskirts of Bengaluru at 9.15am today.
Explaining about RO-RO service, South Western Railway (SWR) said it will have an open flat wagon in which trucks are loaded with goods. The truck driver and cleaner sit in their vehicles. They are dropped at a particular point from which they depart.
The train will take 17 hours to reach its final destination, which is at a distance of about 682 km.
This train can transport up to 42 trucks with goods at the same time.
The train will pass through Dharmavaram, Guntakal, Raichur and Wadi to reach Bale near Solapur in Maharashtra.
According to SWR, the RO-RO service reduces accidents on the road, improves safety, saves fuel and money.
It ensures faster transportation of essential, perishable goods, food and smaller cargo, he said.
While it facilitates the movement of goods on a large scale and reduces pollution, the cost of transport is lower than that of road transport.
