Karnataka CM calls on ‘missing’ UK returnees to cooperate with the government

The appeal of CM comes from seven people, who returned to the state from the UK recently, testing positive for the new strain of the virus.

Karnataka’s Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday called on all “missing” UK returnees to be tested for the new strain of coronavirus, for their own safety and also to slow the spread of the infection. . “As chief minister of the state, I urge all those who have returned from the UK to come forward and get a medical checkup. Make sure you don’t create problems for others,” Yediyurappa told reporters.

Yediyurappa tweeted: “Dear citizens, the danger to the crown has yet to subside. As we enter the New Year, not even the slightest ignorance about the pandemic is made. Follow the government guidelines and rules and stay safe by taking all necessary precautionary measures. and cooperate “.

The CM appeal comes in the wake of seven people, who returned to the state from the UK recently, tested positive for the new strain of the virus and are receiving treatment at designated hospitals in the city.

A total of 2,500 people have arrived in the state from the UK between November 25 and December 22 on two flights: Air India and British Airways.

As of Tuesday night, Karnataka’s health department said 29 people had tested positive so far. It is unclear how many returnees from the UK have yet to be located by the government.

As some returnees from the UK fell off the radar, Karnataka’s health department has sought the help of the department of origin in locating them.

The CM ruled out any changes to the COVID-19 safety guidelines for now as the danger from the coronavirus has not diminished.

“There are no changes to the guidelines at the moment. If there are any instructions from Delhi (Union government), let’s see then,” he said in response to a query.

The Chief Minister said that the Union Health Ministry is monitoring the spread of the new variant of the UK coronavirus in India, so Karnataka cannot decide on its own.

“We will wait for new guidelines from them only then will the state think about changing the current COVID-19 security protocols,” he said, adding that until then everyone will have to remain vigilant and test those who have come from outside.

The CM appeal comes before the New Year, even as the government has banned parties, special DJ dance shows, and special events in clubs, pubs, restaurants, and other venues that draw people in large numbers in a bid to keep the spread. of the virus under control. .

The gathering of people in public places and roads for celebrations has also been prohibited, but routine activities can be carried out in these places.
