BENGALURU: The BJP and Congress on Thursday he claimed important victories of the candidates backed by them in the gram panchayat (GP) elections held recently after the recount of votes concluded on Thursday.
“Approximately 60% of the candidates supported by the BJP have won the elections and our party’s supporters led in 3,800 of the 5,728 panchayats in the state,” CM BS Yediyurappa he told reporters.
Former CM Siddaramaiah he said that candidates backed by Congress won 65% of the seats. The remarks came despite the electoral panel expressing reservations about making partisan claims, as elections are not contested with party symbols.

Earlier, BJP estate Nalin Kumar Kateel said that party-backed candidates won 55% of all seats.
“Yediyurappa, like CM, should not make outrageous claims of winning 3,800 GP, especially when the choice is apolitical and the GP reserve has yet to be announced. There is no truth in Yediyurappa’s claims. We have won most of the seats, ”said Siddaramaiah.
Acting President of Congress Saleem Ahmed tweeted: “Although the BJP government misused its machinery and public money, it failed to beat us in the polls.”
The JD (S) said it has managed to defend its strongholds in the south Karnataka. Its leader, HD Kumaraswamy, said that despite national parties courting their cadre and contenders with money and muscle strength, most of the party-backed candidates have stuck with them and won party elections. “I urge each of them, including those who were defeated, to work for Gram Swarajya’s dream and to develop the panchayats,” he tweeted.
Elections for 91,339 seats in 5,728 village panchayats were held on December 22 and 27, with an electoral turnout of 81%.
Reports suggested that the BJP has made inroads into rural areas, as well as expanding its base in the Old Mysuru region, a stronghold of Congress and JD (S).
The CM said: “The victory of the BJP-backed candidates demonstrates the people’s faith in the party and in Prime Minister Modi. The BJP has been winning all the elections, whether they are electoral assemblies or local bodies ”.
