Due to the spread of COVID-19, the Karnataka government has banned the setting off of firecrackers on this Diwali festival.

Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced on Friday that the government has banned the setting off of firecrackers on this Diwali festival and that orders will be issued soon.

After consulting with officials from the Department of Health and Family Welfare, the state government made a formal announcement to ban the setting off of firecrackers.

Already some northern Indian states have banned the setting off of firecrackers, citing twin problems of COVID-19 and air pollution.

Firecracker makers are expected to oppose the government’s decision and are likely to meet with the Chief Minister to repeal the ban this festival season as they have already produced a large number of firecrackers.
