Prominent Baloch activist Karima Baloch, who had fled Pakistan in 2016 to seek refuge in Canada, was found dead under unexplained circumstances at Harbourfront, near the shores of Toronto’s lake.
A day after the local police reported her missing, her body was found drowned on an island near the shore of the lake. Her husband Hammal Haider and her brother identified her body.
According to a report, the 35-year-old activist, who was a vocal critic of the Pakistani government, disappeared on Sunday and was last seen at around 3 p.m. in the Bay Street and Queens Quay West area.
He criticized the atrocities committed against the Baloch people in Pakistan. She also raised the issue of gender inequality in Pakistan at the United Nations during the 39th session of the Human Rights Council in 2018.
“If a woman is killed by her brother in the name of honor, Islamic law allows her to settle the case with the father or with the rest of the family. In most cases, the family forgives the murderer who is left blameless. Furthermore, as the testimony of two women is the same as that of a man, rape cases are less likely to be decided in favor of the victims, “said Karima in her speech.
The National Baloch Movement has announced forty days of mourning for Karima Baloch, reported Indian express.
“The death of activist Karima Baloch in Toronto, Canada, is deeply shocking and must be investigated immediately and effectively. The perpetrators must be brought to justice without resorting to the death penalty,” Amnesty International said in a tweet.
In 2016, Karima was included in BBCThe list of 100 inspiring and influential women, in which she was described as an activist “for the independence of Baluchistan from Pakistan.”
My thanks to the BBC. I share this with countless inspiring women in #Balochistan fight for freedom. Never give up. https://t.co/gj77GvYrHV
