'It will make her proud': Kamala Harris on her mother during a big debate

Kamala Harris has often referred to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, as her source of inspiration.

New Delhi:

US Senator Kamala Harris mentioned her immigrant mother and how proud she would be to see her on stage during her only time with Vice President Mike Pence for the vice presidential election. “The fact that I’m sitting here will make her proud,” the Democratic vice presidential candidate said during the debate in Salt Lake City, Utah, ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

“I think of my mother … the fact that I’m sitting here right now would make her proud. It’s because of my mother that she came to America at 19, gave birth to me at 25. I think I’m sitting here will make her proud. Joe and I share a purpose to help people, “Harris said.

The Democratic vice presidential candidate has often referred to her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, as her source of inspiration who has guided her throughout her life.

“My mother always used to say, ‘Don’t just sit around and complain about things. Do something,'” Harris, 55, wrote in a fundraising email to supporters last month.

The Biden-Harris campaign has been gaining support from the Asian American community and many have shown solidarity with Harris by tweeting pictures and stories of their mothers and grandmothers in a #SheRose #AAPISheRose campaign that has gained momentum on Twitter.

Just hours before the long-awaited showdown between Harris and Pence, Kamala Harris’s sister Maya tweeted a picture of her and her sister Kamala with their mother, who immigrated to the United States from India, writing: “My shero: Shyamala Gopalan. #SheRose and made it possible for @KamalaHarris to run. #AAPISheRose. “

Kamala Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, made headlines in August after being selected as a Democratic candidate.
