An evocative and harshly worded statement by actor Suriya against taking the NEET medical entrance test has drawn the ire of the judiciary. Madras High Court Judge SM Subramaniam has written a letter to the Madras High Court President requesting contempt proceedings for Suriya’s objectionable references to the functioning of the judiciary in the letter.
In the statement Suriya had issued on Sunday, he had strongly criticized the need for the NEET exam in the adverse conditions imposed by the lockdown and the general digital divide between students with better training and Internet connectivity and those who are trying to settle for little. or no installation. To drive home the point that the exam shouldn’t have been taken, Suriya wondered how students can be expected to take a bold step and write an exam when judges do their duty via video conferencing from their homes.
“Fearing for their lives due to the coronavirus, the court, which delivers justice through video conferencing, orders students to go fearlessly and write exams …,” the statement read, written in Tamil.
The judge reportedly held that the letter written to the Chief Justice considered Suriya’s attitude to be derogatory towards the court.
NEET has become a very emotional topic in Tamil Nadu. On Saturday, three students from Tamil Nadu committed suicide. DMK Chairman MK Stalin said that if he voted for power, his party would abolish the medical entrance test. Today, the DMK organized a protest inside the Parliament premises seeking the withdrawal of NEET. In Tamil Nadu, as the three-day Assembly session began today, members of the DMK board of directors wore masks with the message “Ban NEETs, save TN students.”
