A local court here held a midnight hearing on Thursday and decided to send a major arrested in a dowry torture case into the custody of the army instead of jail.
Subdivisional Judicial Magistrates Court (SDJM) Judge SK Mishra visited the court at 10 pm after attempts to hold the hearing via video conference failed. The hearing continued until after 1.30 am.
After the hearing, the court ordered that the arrested major be sent to army custody instead of jail.
Earlier, the Mahila Police Station had arrested the commander on the basis of charges of physical and mental torture of his wife for dowry and attempted murder. The army officer was in the Nayapalli area of the city.
A case against the army officer has been registered at the police station under various sections of the IPC and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
The officer had allegedly threatened his wife with shooting her if she did not bring money from her parents.
The wife in her complaint said that although the matter was mutually resolved earlier, her husband continued the torture. Although the police notified the major, he did not respond. On Thursday he was arrested by the police.
