Joe Biden Says He Won’t Quickly Eliminate Phase One Tariffs In China

President-elect Joe Biden told the New York Times that he would leave the phase one trade agreement with China in place while conducting a full review of US policy toward China in consultation with key allies.

Speaking to columnist Thomas Friedman, Biden said he would not immediately overturn the trade deal President Donald Trump struck with China earlier this year.

“I’m not going to make any immediate moves, and the same applies to rates,” Biden said, according to the report. “I’m not going to hurt my options.”

Biden told Friedman that he would first conduct a full review of the phase one deal and consult with traditional allies in Asia and Europe “so that we can develop a coherent strategy.”

“China’s best strategy, I think, is one that puts each of our, or at least those who used to be, allies on the same page,” Biden said. “It is going to be one of the top priorities for me in the first weeks of my presidency to try to get us back on the same page with our allies.”
