A Jammu and Kashmir police officer was shot dead by militants in the Anantnag district of southern Kashmir on Monday night, authorities said.
They said the militants opened fire on Mohammad Ashraf, a Jammu and Kashmir police inspector, in the Kenalwan area of Anantnag.
He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
“Inspector M Ashraf was attacked and taken to a nearby hospital, but could not survive,” said an official from the Anantnag police control room.
Locals said the officer was returning home after offering prayers when he was attacked.
Additional forces were moved to the area, which was immediately cordoned off to locate the attackers.
Earlier in the day, security forces killed a militant in an encounter in the Shopian district, police said.
The meeting had started after the security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Melhura in Zainapora after receiving information about the presence of militants.
