J&K: fresh snowfall on plains, IMD issues orange alert for higher ranges

Kashmir is under the influence of a new western disturbance that could cause snowfall on the plains. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the upper reaches of J&K and the Sonmarg -Zojila axis.

Since Sunday night, the valley is witnessing rain while the upper reaches are seeing snowfall, especially in northern Kashmir. Light snowfall was reported on the plains and in some places it was reported early in the morning.

IMD Director Sonam Lotus said that, as predicted, light to moderate snowfall was reported even when heavy snowfall was reported in isolated locations.

“Some places in Jammu, Drass-Sonmarg axis are still snowing and it is likely to continue. This period will bring good snow and rain, ”he said, adding that overall the period is likely to last between November 23 and 25 and will decrease significantly thereafter.

“There could be a temporary outage [of traffic] in Zojila, the Banihal-Ramban axis, the Mughal highway and other vulnerable points due to snow and low temperatures. There is an orange weather warning for the highest sections of the J&K and Sonmarg -Zojila axis, ”he said.

Meanwhile, J & K’s Disaster Management department had warned of avalanches in the upper regions of Kashmir, especially in the northern parts, asking people to be vigilant.

Gulmarg, which received two snow spells this month in Baramulla, registered minus 7.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday night. Fresh snowfall was recorded in Pahalgam and Gulmarg, both famous tourist spots in Kashmir. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 8.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 1.6 degrees Celsius.

After the snowfall, the historic Mughal Highway was closed to traffic from early in the morning.

“The Mughal road is closed due to snow. It snowed in the Jawahar tunnel and it started to rain in Jammu-Srinagar NHW, but so far it has reached @JmuKmrPolice, ”tweeted the spokesperson for the J&K traffic department.
