Plans for ‘Homegrown 5G’ First Announced by Jio at Reliance Industries Limited’s AGM 2020. At the event, Ambani announced that Jio has developed a 5G solution from scratch and that it will be ready for testing as soon as the 5G spectrum is available and can be ready for deployment in the field in 2021.
At AGM 2020 on July 15, Mukesh Ambani said:
“TODAY friends, I am proud to announce … that Jio has designed and developed a complete 5G solution from the ground up. This will allow us to launch a world-class 5G service in India … using 100% local technologies and solutions. This 5G solution made in India will be ready for testing as soon as 5G spectrum is available … and may be ready for field deployment next year. And due to Jio’s converged, all-IP network architecture … we can upgrade our 4G to 5G network easily. Once Jio’s 5G solution is tested at India scale, Jio Platforms would be well positioned to be an exporter of 5G solutions to other telecom operators globally, as a complete managed service. Jio’s 5G solution to our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s highly motivating vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.“
Jio’s global fiber and 4G network is powered by several core technologies and software components. “It is this ability and knowledge that positions Jio at the forefront of another exciting frontier: 5G,” he said.
Ambani also announced that in the next three years, Jio will connect 500 million mobile customers, 1 billion smart sensors, and 50 million domestic and commercial establishments.
“We have launched five digital connectivity growth accelerators: mobile broadband, JioFiber, Jio enterprise broadband, SMB broadband and Jio narrowband Internet of Things (NBIoT),” he said.
