The author of the joint (main) entrance exam in Assam, his father and three other people have been arrested for allegedly using a power of attorney to write the country’s most important engineering entrance test, Guwahati police said. The candidate scored 99.8 percent on the exam, which is the basis for admission to the best engineering universities in India, including the prestigious IITs.
The candidate, Neel Nakshatra Das, his father, Dr. Jyotirmoy Das, and three employees of a testing center, Hamendra Nath Sarma, Pranjal Kalita and Hirulal Pathak, were arrested, Guwahati police said.
They will be produced in a local court on Thursday.
“An FIR (First Information Report) has been registered with the Azara Police in Assam against the head of the Joint Entrance Examination Network (JEE) in Assam, allegedly for using a power of attorney to appear in the exam on his behalf. We investigated the case and they have discovered that the candidate used a proxy with the help of another agency that acted as an intermediary, “Guwahati Police Commissioner MP Gupta told NDTV.
“Guwahati testing center staff are also involved. We are looking for more people (who are involved in the crime). This may not be a unique case, but it may be part of a larger scam … in all the aspects, “he added.
Last week, a man named Mitradev Sharma filed a complaint in this regard, based on a recording of a viral phone call and a screenshot of the WhatsApp chat in which the candidate allegedly speaks of having used unfair means to obtain grades. higher in the test.
The exam center supervisor allegedly helped the candidate cheat, police said. The applicant entered the facility on the day of the test only to enter his name and list number on the answer sheet, police said, adding that the test was written by an outside representative.
The examination center was sealed off and management summoned, police said.
Assam police have informed the National Testing Agency (NTA) of the incident.
