Of the 8.58 lakh candidates who had registered for the JEE (main) exam to enter engineering universities, up to 6.35 lakh defied the threat of COVID-19 and the difficulties imposed by restrictions due to the pandemic, the minister said. of Union Education, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. on Wednesday.
“Out of 8.58 lakhs of #JEEMains applicants, 6.35 lakhs showed up for the exam. The central government and the respective state governments ensured all possible attendance to the students, for which I also congratulate all the state governments. All this effort showed the spirit of cooperative federalism, ”Nishank said in a tweet.
There were many doubts about the Center’s decision to take the entrance test from September 1-6 in light of the growing number of COVID-19 cases. Nishank, however, said that many candidates may not have taken the exam in September, as they already did on their first attempt in January.
“The exams take place twice a year. The previous one was held in January of this year. Several students who did not take the exam in September may have performed well on the January exam, so this time they did not feel the need to take the exam. We are finding out those numbers, ”he said.
In another tweet, the education minister said that delaying the exam further would not have benefited students.
“Any other exam delays would not have benefited our hardworking students or their college admissions plans. Our government of NDA has always been unwavering regarding the well-being and safety of students. We will always work for the interests of our youth, ”he said.
Referring to a tweet from BJP MP Subramanian Swamy, Nishank said that “the number of applicants for #JEEMains is 8.58 lakhs, not 18 lakhs as you tweeted.” After JEE (Main), the NTA is preparing for the NEET entrance medical exam.
