Last year, too, the same number of candidates ranked first. However, two states had the best performance: Telangana and Rajasthan. Four candidates from each state scored at the 100th percentile in 2019.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the results Friday night, less than a week after the entrance test ended. Since 2019, JEE (Main) has been held twice a year. The first cycle took place in January. The second cycle of this year’s entrance test was delayed due to the pandemic. Finally it was carried out in 12 shifts over six days from September 1 to 6.

The results announced Friday night reflect the best performance of the candidates who took the test in January and September.
Attendance to the second cycle appears to have suffered from the pandemic. It fell 20 percentage points from the first test conducted in January. Although 94.32 percent of registered students took the exam in January 2020, attendance dropped to 74 percent for the exam held earlier this month. Of the 8.58 lakhs of unique applicants, 6.35 lakh appeared for the engineering entrance test in September.
The conduct of the JEE (Main) was involved in controversy with some students who demanded that the exam be postponed, given the increase in COVID cases in the country. The entrance test had already been postponed twice before.
Despite student protests, the government went ahead with the exam, arguing that careers cannot be suspended indefinitely. the The Supreme Court had also dismissed a petition for postponement, arguing that “the career of the students cannot be put in danger”. It is the first national income test to be carried out amid the pandemic. Next is NEET on September 16.
JEE (main) is the qualification exam to take the JEE (advanced). The best 2.5 lakh JEE (Primary) candidates may appear for JEE (Advanced), which is the entrance test for admission to the 23 IITs.
