Bangalore:
VK Sasikala, the close aide to the late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, who is serving a four-year prison sentence on corruption charges, has sought referral and early release from prison, official sources said today.
Ms. Sasikala, housed at Parappana Agrahara Prison in Bengaluru, is expected to be released on January 27, 2021 after depositing a 10 million rupee fine in a special court.
However, he has requested a remission of his sentence to leave early, sources close to the leader told the Press Trust of India news agency.
The prison authorities have forwarded your request to higher officials.
“She has requested the waiver of her jail sentence and has been referred to the head of the department for his consideration,” a source told the PTI news agency.
The authorities have yet to attend to him.
After the Supreme Court reinstated the trial court’s judgment against Sasikala and two of her close relatives in the disproportionate assets case, she surrendered to the court in Karnataka on February 15, 2017 and has been staying at the Central Jail of Parappana Agrahara.
His two relatives are also subjected to four years in simple prison and all three were fined 10 million rupees each.
With the death of Jayalalithaa in 2016, who was the first defendant in the case, Karnataka’s appeal against her faded.
Under the rules, three days of good behavior referral are available for each month in prison and she has served 43 months so far, making her eligible for a reduction of 135 days in prison.
