Jason Roy has been approved and selected from a 14-man squad to face Australia in the upcoming three-game ODI series. The 30-year-old had missed the T20I series against Pakistan and Australia due to lateral tension and also withdrew from the 2020 IPL that follows.

The World Cup winners also added Dawid Malan as a reserve following the left-hander’s impressive show in T20I, which saw him catapult to the top of the ICC batting rankings. Malan, however, has not played an ODI since his debut against Ireland in May 2019.

Joe Denly, who was previously part of the reserves, is retiring and will return to Kent for the T20 Blast. Phil Salt and Saqib Mahmood will remain with the team as a reserve.

England ODI Squad: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Bookings: Dawid Malan, Phil Salt, Saqib Mahmood

England should, in all likelihood, have Eoin Morgan lead them in the first ODI at Old Trafford on Friday (September 11), with a finger injury that kept him out of the third T20I not considered serious. Jos Buttler is also set to appear if he passes the COVID-19 test before his return to the bubble. He was allowed to leave the group after the series victory in the second T20I.

“Jos will return to the bubble to join us in Manchester, showing the test results,” confirmed coach Chris Silverwood. “He should be available to play. Eoin, obviously good news around his finger, and knock on wood will also be in shape. Malan has come in as reserve, Roy has outgrown form so he will join the team and obviously Salt has come in as reserve as well. “.
