Jammu and Kashmir: PoK woman, once married to terrorist, contesting District Development Council poll | India News

A woman from the Occupied Kashmir of Pakistan (PoK), married to a former militant, is participating in the elections of the District Development Council of the Dragmulla Block of the Kupwara district of North Kashmir.

Sumiya Sadaf, a resident of occupied Kashmir from Muzafarabad Pakistan, said she came to Kashmir ten years ago, after marrying a local militant from Batargam Kupwara village who had crossed the Line of Control (LoC) for weapons training and returned home under the government’s rehabilitation policy.

Sumiya Sadaf Candidate DDC said: “I came in 2010 after the government’s rehabilitation policy. Since I am here. We arrived with the message of peace and we want peace in the country. Development is important and I want to work on it. “

Sadaf is not the first PaK woman to jump into the fray. In 2018, two Pakistani women administered Kashmir, Arifa and Dilshada, married to former militants, had won panchayat positions in the Kupwara district of northern Kashmir.

Sadaf’s electoral symbol is ‘Laptop’. There are 12 candidates in the fray, while Sadaf is the only woman participating in this bloc.

Sumiya Sadaf Candidate DDC added: “It is difficult for the government to provide jobs for everyone.” If I win, I would persuade and motivate people to become self-employed. Everyone has the ability to be entrepreneurs and here we can do this and people, particularly women, can start their own companies. “
