Having represented six IPL franchises so far, the wicketkeeper-batsman has yet to play for his hometown franchise.
Dinesh Karthik has been living in the shadow of MS Dhoni since he made an initial impression with the Indian team in 2004. Dhoni made his debut in late 2004 and since then Karthik has had a starting career. With experience on his side, it wasn’t until recently that he was able to lead an IPL side.
Karthik has been one of the most successful players in the history of the league. Having represented six IPL franchises so far, the wicketkeeper-batsman has yet to play for the team from his hometown. Karthik is one of the few players to have come out of Tamil Nadu and has been successful or recognized worldwide. Unlike his Tamil Nadu teammates – Murali Vijay and Ravichandran Ashwin – Karthik was never fortunate enough to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Karthik had hoped that CSK would choose him at the first IPL auction
Recently in interaction with Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik recalled the first auction when he expected to be chosen by CSK. At the time, he was a regular member of the Indian squad in all three formats and the only one in Tamil Nadu. Karthik recalled that he was sure CSK would choose him, but he wasn’t sure if they would make him captain or not.
“In 2008, I was in Australia and the auction was taking place. Before that, I was convinced that the biggest name in Tamil Nadu, who is also playing for the country … I am sure that they (Chennai Super Kings) will choose me. The question is if they are going to do the captain to me or not … that was happening in my head, “he said.
However, Ms dhoni It was bought by CSK for INR 6 crore, the highest bid in the first auction. The 34-year-old man revealed that Dhoni was with him when the auction occurred. He even said he felt like they could choose him later at some point, but that never happened. Unfortunately, Dinesh Karthik has been waiting for a CSK call for 13 years, but he never received that call.
“And the first name they chose as Dhoni, for $ 1.5 million (INR $ 6 million in 2008) and he was sitting just around the corner with me. And he didn’t even tell me they’re going to pick him up. You probably didn’t know that. But that was the biggest dagger for my heart. So I thought they would choose me later. Thirteen years have passed and I’m still waiting for that elusive call from CSK, “Karthik said as he chose his all-time IPL XI during a conversation with Cricbuzz.
