‘It’s not me’: Kodagu DC in viral video claiming to be congratulated on COVID-19 work

Annies Kanmani Joy has earned accolades for handling the COVID-19 crisis in the Kodagu district.

On Monday evening, Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy was amused to receive videos and WhatsApp messages indicating that the Kodagu people were congratulating her on her role in managing the COVID-19 crisis in the district. . Except that the woman in the video wasn’t her. “That is not me in the video. Since yesterday (Monday), I am receiving endless messages about it, but it is not me! They told me that the video was shared on a Facebook page and then downloaded and circulated on WhatsApp “, Annies. he told TNM.

The woman in the video is an employee of an e-commerce company Safe Shop India in Hyderabad, reported Boom Live. The video was forwarded along with a message saying: “She was a nurse at Trivandrum Medical College. She completed IAS and was posted as a district collector in Kodagu. Due to her nursing background, she could help the Kodagu district fully come out of COVID “. She is receiving a special gift from the people of Kodagu. “

Annies, a 35-year-old IAS officer in her first position as Deputy Commissioner in Kodagu, admits there is some truth to the message. “I completed my nursing studies at the Medical College, Trivandrum in 2009 and wrote the IAS exam and was ranked 65th in 2012. Details of our work to contain the spread of COVID-19 in our district are uploaded on our networking pages social. every day, “he says.

Prior to her role as Kodagu DC, Annies served as Bidar’s assistant commissioner, Karnaataka Bhavan, and as executive director, Tumakuru’s ZP. It was published as Kodagu DC in February 2019.

But Annies says the public did not congratulate her on her work amid the COVID-19 crisis. “It’s fun for me to see the reaction because it’s just the work that we are doing and people are cooperating with the guidelines. People have love and respect for me and people appreciate the work here. But the person in that video is not me.” , she says.

In March, at the beginning of the outbreak of COVID-19 cases in Karnataka, Annies acted swiftly to close tourist spots in Kodagu before the national lockdown was imposed on March 25.

Kodagu, a mountainous district with a sparse population, has recorded just 4,720 COVID-19 cases and 61 related deaths since March. The district now has 306 active cases.

Last month, the district also hosted two major events, the Cauvery Theerthotsava and the Madikeri Dasara, and the district administration published strict guidelines for both events and restricted public entry to a minimum.

“It’s a team effort with the health and medical education department leading the response. We had two major festivals with guidelines followed by the public,” says Annies.

On the day of Theerthotsava, devotees were tested for temperature and symptoms and it was also ensured that those taking part in the festival celebration had tested negative for COVID-19.

In the year and a half in charge as Kodagu DC, Annies Joy has overseen a number of crisis situations, including the devastating floods and landslides in the mountain district and the subsequent restrictions on the marketing of agricultural land in Kodagu.

It is now preparing to ensure that the district and its residents remain vigilant for the number of COVID-19 cases and ensure that tourist spots and homestays in the district adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines.
