India will play a four-game test series in Australia later this year. But with the COVID-19 pandemic wreaking havoc, speculation abounds that the games could be held behind closed doors.
This led Lyon and teammate Mitchell Starc to discuss how Kohli’s behavior on the field would change without the backing and noise of the crowd, something the Indian captain thrives on.
“It’s probably good enough to fit any scenario. But I was talking to Mitch Starc the other day and we actually said that if we’re playing without a crowd, it will be quite surprising to see Virat trying to speed up the (empty) seats,” he said. Lyon according to ‘cricket.com.au’.
“It is going to be a little different, but Virat is a superstar. He will be able to adapt to any climate we can play in,” added Lyon.
Sports calendars have been crushed around the world, including national and international cricket.
Last month, Australia’s ODI series against New Zealand was suspended after the first match. Lyon, 32, is still excited about the series’ prospect against India.
“I am excited about the possibility of India coming to Australia, it is at the height of the largest series alongside the Ashes. They are an absolute powerhouse in the world of cricket, and having those guys here will be fantastic,” he said.
Lyon is hopeful that the home series will continue, with or without fans.
“Playing in front of crowds or not crowds is beyond our control, we have to follow the advice of all the amazing medical people around the world.
“I haven’t thought about crowds or massive crowds, it’s just the opportunity to play India again,” he said.
Australia tested their first loss in the test series against India on their territory in 2018-19 when Kohli’s men gave them a 2-1 loss.
However, with people like Steve Smith and David Warner, who were suspended last time, and Marnus Labuschagne, the Australian batting unit seems pretty solid now.
“They had the wood on us the last time they came here, but right now we are a much stronger Australian cricket team, and I am incredibly excited to play them here at home.”
With the postponement of several series and a reserved Future Tour program, doubts have also arisen about the future of the ICC World Test Championship.
India ranks first with 360 points, followed by Australia with 296 points, while New Zealand ranks third with 180 points.
“I think it is important that the top two teams in that period compete in the final of the testing championship, and obviously I want Australia to be there,” Lyon said.
“But that is a decision for the great leaders of the ICC and everyone else involved, we will just have to wait and see.”
At this time, Lyon enjoys spending time with his family.
“I don’t remember when cricket took the back seat of my life,” said Lyon.
“You have to look at the positives right now, and that’s a very positive one for me right now,” he added.
