Chennai The wife of a doctor and a victim of coronavirus tearfully appealed to Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami, for a decent burial for her husband after authorities hastily finished work due to the strong neighbors’ opposition.
Dr. Simon Hercules was unceremoniously taken to a shallow grave at Velangadu in Chennai after an ambulance driver and health inspector transporting the body suffered severe attacks from locals who feared that the burial could spread the infection. .
The 55-year-old doctor, who ran New Hope in Chetpet, was a renowned practitioner in his locality. Dr. Hercules had contracted the disease while treating patients with COVID-19.
Appealing to the CM with his hands together, his wife Anandi Simon said, “This was his last wish.”
Anandi said Dr. Hercules appeared in a video just before he was put on the respirator and said that if he doesn’t survive the disease, he wants to be buried in accordance with custom.
After his death, the local church priest had given permission to be buried in Kilpauk, but that never happened.
As the news spread, Health Minister C Vijayabaskar tried to reassure citizens that burying victims of the coronavirus did not pose a threat to people living in the neighborhood.
He also promised strict action against those who damaged the ambulance carrying the doctor’s body and attacked the driver and the health worker. The accused will be put behind bars, the minister said.
A similar incident was reported when residents of Ambattur village staged a stir during the last rites of an Andhra Pradesh-based doctor who died in Chennai.
