Following Mumbai Police’s claim of tampering with Television Rating Points (PRTs) by some channels, it is likely that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology will address the issue after the congressional deputy , Karti Chidambaram, wrote to the head of the panel, Shashi Tharoor.
A notification sent to the members of the standing committee related to the IT department notified the members that the next two sessions of the committee will be held on October 15 and 16. The session will hear the opinions of the representatives of the Association of News Broadcasters, the Press Council of India and Prasar Bharati on the topic ‘Ethical standards in media coverage’, followed by tests of the representatives of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on the same topic.
Karti’s demand that the parliamentary panel should address the issue came a day after Mumbai police claimed to have busted a TRP rigging fraud and arrested four people. “The recent problems surrounding TV channel PRTs have cast doubt on the legitimacy and reliability of the system. PRTs produce essential data on television audiences in India and have become the main basis for advertising decisions. But public spending should not be based on faulty data. In light of this, it is important that the Standing Committee on Information and Technology address this issue, “Karti said in a letter to panel chair Tharoor.
