Kolkata: A low-pressure area brewing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to cause rains in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal during Durga Puja, weather authorities said Friday. The low-pressure area is likely to form around Oct. 19 and be more marked thereafter, they said.

Although the system is likely to move towards the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast, the southwest wind flow will improve in West Bengal, resulting in the likelihood of rain, the Met department said. In South Bengal, including Kolkata, light to moderate rains are likely until 20 October.

During Durga Puja, from October 21 to 26, the intensity of rainfall in the region is likely to increase in both quantity and extent, the meteorological office said. Districts in North Bengal are also likely to see light rains during the days leading up to the puja and light to moderate rains during the festival, he said.
