Rohit Sharma made a surprise comeback after a hamstring injury when he started for the Mumbai Indians in their final game before the playoffs against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday. The move drew attention when BCCI president Sourav Ganguly claimed on the same day that the starter was injured and therefore not included in the team against Australia.
Rohit missed the last four Mumbai games after sustaining a left hamstring injury while finishing a race at the end of the first of two Super Overs. He had not been named in any of the three Indian teams that were announced last week for the Australian tour.
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, who was also the head coach, questioned Rohit’s participation in the IPL and asked if the league was more important than representing the country. Now, the question here is, is IPL more important to him than playing for India? Is the club more important to him than playing for the nation? Will the BCCI accept a call about this? Or was it that BCCI’s physical therapist failed to correctly diagnose Rohit’s injury? Vengsarkar said in an interview with the Times of India.
Earlier, Vengsarkar had criticized Suryakumar Yadav’s omission saying: “I am in awe of the omission of Surya, who is currently one of the most talented hitters in the country, from the teams selected for the Australian tour.”
“When it comes to potential, I can compare Surya to the best of the Indian team. He has consistently scored runs. I don’t know what else he has to do to deserve a spot on the Indian team, ”he added. “A hitter is in his prime between the ages of 26 and 34. And I feel like Surya (30) is at the peak of his career. If form and suitability are not the criteria, what is? Can anyone explain it? With Rohit (Sharma) out of the team due to a (hamstring) injury, Surya should have been there to strengthen the middle order. BCCI President Ganguly should question the reason for Surya’s downfall, ”commented the former head of selection of India.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels the BCCI needs to clear up the confusion. “From Ravi Shastri’s statement, it is read to me that they want him to be more conditioned in the body. Maybe he’s not so fit. We know that the type of bus that Virat Kohli drives is very suitable. If you are not part of the fit bus, you are pushed aside, no matter who you are. That’s the problem, maybe I’m not as fit as I could be, ”Vaughan told Cricbuzz.
“If Rohit Sharma has an injury, tell us what the injury is. Let’s be very clear, that look has a hamstring problem. Well, no problem, we understand that is why you are not playing. If it’s just because he’s not playing because he could get injured, I’ve never heard that before in my life, “he added.
Vaughan, who called the scenario “very strange and strange,” said: “I’m intrigued by next week, how he plays with Rohit Sharma, if he plays, he will surely go to Australia.” I don’t see why he wouldn’t go to Australia if he’s playing in the IPL.
“I am intrigued by the way it has been handled. It is very strange and strange that he is not open and honest. It seems that it doesn’t have to be this way. It’s Rohit Sharma. If you are injured, tell us you are injured. That’s not a problem, players get injured, ”said the England legend.
