New Delhi: In an important indication that the government led by Narendra Modi could lift the blockade after May 17, Indian Railways announced yesterday that it would operate 15 express air-conditioned (AC) trains equivalent to its premium Rajdhani Express from May 12 with stops limited. In a statement, Indian Railways said: “The national carrier plans to gradually restart AC passenger train special operations starting Tuesday with 15 trains, including their return journey, with limited stops. This occurs shortly after the Union Minister of Health stated that 10 Union states / territories have not reported a single case of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours and that there are four states / UTs in the country that never reported no case of coronavirus. He reported that the National Institute of Virology in Pune has successfully developed the first indigenous antibody detection kit for COVID-19. According to government data, 1,511 COVID-19 patients recovered in the past 24 hours, the highest number of recoveries recorded in one day. Additionally, the recovery rate has increased to more than 30 percent.
On March 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a 21-day national blockade to break the COVID-19 chain. It again extended the blockade for an additional 19 days until May 3, and then the government once again extended the blockade for more weeks until May 17.
In light of the national shutdown since March 24, the railways had suspended passenger, mail and express train services. Only freight trains and special packages were working to transport essential items across the country.
