Two days after his IPL team, Mumbai Indians, retained the high-profile Twenty20 league title in the United Arab Emirates, all-rounder Krunal Pandya was detained and questioned at Mumbai airport on Thursday by the Intelligence Directorate of Revenue (DRI) for allegedly attempting to enter undeclared diamond encrusted luxury watches and others.
Sources told The Indian Express that 29-year-old Pandya was detained on the basis of a notice and it was discovered that he was allegedly in possession of two Audemars Piguet models with diamonds and two Rolexes that were not declared to Customs. The total value of the watches is estimated to be about Rs 1 crore, they said.
Pandya was questioned for about three hours, after the team arrived around 4.30 pm on a chartered flight and was allowed to depart after the watches were confiscated, sources said.
“The box and the watches were delivered to the Mumbai Airport Customs unit. The player will have to pay the tax and a fine if he wishes to take possession of the watches, ”the sources said.
Imported luxury watches may be subject to duties of up to 38.5 percent of the value exceeding the Rs 35,000 duty free, in this case.
Krunal Pandya is the older brother of Indian off-roader Hardik Pandya. He has played 18 T20 Internationals for India.
